Case in point, Middle Country's budget for next year says the following:
If budget is approved: 6.68% increase
If budget is rejected: 21.61% increase
How is that even possible ? How is that even a choice to Vote? What is the meaning of a VOTE ? Well its a right to choose ! Now I did some research how they come up with this and can even get away with it. That's the reason we need Tax cap and real reforms right now or school districts will rip you off every year against your will. They give all that money to their fat salaries, nice pensions and benefits that don't fit in today's economy. Its much similar to Wall street paying bonus and stock options to themselves while using taxpayer money to bailout on cheap terms.
Here is the budget summary for Middle Country
|Home Assessed at $4,000||Proposed Budget||Contingent Budget*|
|2011/12 Estimated Tax Rate||220.14||250.96|
|Average Daily Increase||1.51||4.89|
|Budget Increase %||1.65||1.62|
|Estimated Tax Rate % Increase||6.68||21.61|
|Proposed Inc. in cost**||551.25||1784.12|
Under a contingency budget the tax rate would be significantly higher.
*Assumes no application of fund balance or reserves under a contingent budget.
**-Increase represents current actual to proposed budget.
Middle Country for year 2009-2010 had $26,689,294 in reserves.
Now for year 2010-2011 they have $18,638,122 in reserves.
So what they have done is over the years they have overcharged their residents and built a nice cushion in reserves and who knows they may have already spent some on generous compensation and benefits. Now in these hard times instead of using those fund they are blackmailing residents not to use that money and use contingency budget instead. There are certain restrictions in contingency budget spending so they basically use this threat to get their will.
Its up to the residents now to revolt against these practices and actually raise awareness. My suggestion is go ahead and Vote NO and see what happens because if you vote YES then the new budget becomes the base for next year contingency budget and the story will go on. Its time for some real reforms as we are bullied against our will.
