Looks like a lot of New York counties are in top 100. The typical resident of Westchester County in New York pays more in property taxes than the typical resident of any other major American county, according to a new analysis of Census data from the Tax Foundation.
Our Long Island Suffolk and Nassau county as a percentage of Income is in top 10 but this data is from 2009 and as of 2011 Nassau has become No. 1 in absolute property taxes.
New York and New Jersey together accounted for all of the top 10 highest median property tax burdens, whether calculated by median property tax dollars paid, or as median taxes as a percent of median home value, or as median taxes as a percent of median income.
Lowest Property Taxes by County
Louisiana parishes consistently came out on top with the lowest property taxes as a percentage of home value. Nearly the entire top ten lowest taxing counties were in Louisiana. The county with the lowest property taxes in the nation was Tangipahoa Parish, Louisiana. Home owners in Tangipahoa Parish pay just 0.13% of their home value in property taxes. Also in the top ten were Apache County, Arizona, which came in at sixth and Maui County, Hawaii which was ranked seventh.Highest Property Taxes by County
When the Tax Foundation compared property taxes by county, New York counties consistently came in with the highest taxes. In fact, New York counties held nine spots on the top ten list of counties with the highest property taxes. The county with the highest property taxes in the nation was Monroe County, New York where residents pay 2.89% of their home value in property taxes. Camden County, New Jersey, the only county on the top ten list that was not in New York, was ranked at 8th. Camden County residents pay 2.50% of their home value in property taxes.When all U.S. counties were ranked by the dollar amount paid in property taxes, without accounting for home value, counties in New York and New Jersey still came in as the highest taxing counties in the nation.
